On 24 September 2026, in The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis, the Church did two things at once. It named Fulton J. Sheen Blessed. And it told the world, in three languages, what kind of blessedness that is.

The Mass was not a celebrity tribute. Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle said as much in the homily. Sheen is not blessed because he won an Emmy, filled a studio, or put a cape on television. He is blessed as an evangelizer and a missionary shepherd. The lectionary was built to say that before the homily even began.

What was read

First reading — Isaiah 52:7–10
Proclaimed in Spanish.

“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings glad tidings… ‘Your God is King!’”

This is the Bible’s picture of the messenger: feet on the road, mouth full of peace and salvation. Tagle tied it to Sheen without dressing it up. Beautiful feet are the feet that go. Sheen’s “mountains” were radio masts, TV cameras, parish halls, and mission appeals. The text is not about charm. It is about a voice that announces that God reigns.

Second reading — 2 Corinthians 4:1–2, 5–7
Proclaimed in Portuguese.

“We do not preach ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord… We hold this treasure in earthen vessels.”

Paul refuses the preacher who becomes the product. Tagle used the line as a warning: to preach your own wisdom instead of Christ’s is to falsify the word of God. That is not mission. That is not blessedness. Sheen used to call himself a doorkeeper at the house of God, not the owner of conversions. Pius XII once asked how many souls he had won. Sheen said he did not count them, so he would not start thinking they were his. The “earthen vessel” is the whole point. The power is God’s.

Gospel — Mark 16:15–20
Proclaimed in English.

“Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature… The Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.”

This is the risen Christ’s last charge in Mark. The Lord chooses, sends, and works with the ones he sends. Tagle was blunt: picking your own road is not mission. Preaching as an excuse to avoid real people is not mission. “Every creature” is not an abstract public. It is faces. The “signs” in the passage also sit quietly next to the miracle that opened the cause: a stillborn child, James Fulton Engstrom, who lived after his parents asked Sheen’s intercession.

The responsorial psalm was Psalm 84 — the ache for the courts of the Lord. That is Sheen’s Holy Hour, the 6 a.m. hour the FBI file noted as a curiosity and Sheen named as the place he got power and light.

The Gospel acclamation said the same thing in one line: Go and teach all nations. I am with you always.

Tagle said the three readings were not a coincidence. They name the same man: in communion with Jesus, not preaching himself, sent into the world — including to the poor. “Blessed is the missionary who digs deep into the heart of the poor to meet Jesus there.”

Why Spanish, Portuguese, and English

The languages were the second sermon.

Sheen was an American face. The Mass was on American soil. English for the Gospel made sense: it is the language of the country that formed him and the language in which most of that crowd heard him first.

Spanish and Portuguese did something else. They refused to let the day shrink to one nation.

Spanish is the largest Catholic language in the Americas. A huge part of the Church Sheen served — and the Church that now asks his intercession — prays in it. Reading Isaiah in Spanish put the “beautiful feet” in the mouth of that Church, not only in the mouth of the host country.

Portuguese did the same for Brazil and the wider Lusophone world — and it was not a random flourish. Tagle, the papal delegate, comes out of the Dicastery for Evangelization. The second reading, about not preaching yourself, was given in a missionary language of the global South. Sheen spent years as national director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. He raised money for missions. At Vatican II he argued that a Church that will not be wounded by poverty cannot convert a doubting world. Portuguese on Paul’s “earthen vessel” put that argument in the liturgy, not only in the history books.

Three languages also said, without a press release, what the decree said in Latin and English: Sheen is “son of Illinois, son of the United States… indeed, son of the world.” A beatification can look like a national feast. The lectionary would not allow it. The first reading crossed a language border. The second did too. Only then did the Gospel speak in the tongue of the hall.

That is the right order for a man whose job was never to make Americans watch a bishop. It was to make the Gospel travel.

What the day was for

If you only remember the cape and the Emmy, the readings will correct you. Isaiah gives the messenger. Paul gives the humility. Mark gives the sending. The languages give the map.

Blessed Fulton Sheen. Not because the camera loved him. Because he did not preach himself — and because the Church, on the day it raised him to the altars, let more than one people say the Word out loud.
