On 24 September 2026, Fulton Sheen was beatified in St. Louis.
In Brazil, priests named him in the homily. Networks carried the Mass with Portuguese translation. Books that had been on shelves for years came back into the room.
In Norway the story went where news goes. Katolsk.no. St. Olav. EWTN Norge. Notert. Then Sunday returned to the lectionary.
That is not a quarrel. It is a map.
The men who organized the Mass said three countries outside the United States kept surprising them: Italy, Poland, Brazil. One reading was in Portuguese on purpose. The books had already done the work. People knew the voice before they knew the title Blessed .
Brazil had translators. It had priests who had taught Sheen for years. It had networks that already treated him as a man of radio, television, the Holy Hour, and mission. When Rome set a date, the parish did not have to introduce a stranger.

Poland had another door. Sheen had spoken of that country in the war and in the Cold War as a test of the world’s conscience. The sentence still works there. Italy had editions and friends’ circles. America had the man himself.
Norway had none of that ground. The Church here is small. Parishes are far apart. Sunday follows the book. The names that belong to this soil are Olav, Sunniva, Hallvard. A newly beatified American bishop is a headline. He is not yet a name you can say aloud and watch the room lean in.
There is a quieter reason as well. Part of Sheen’s American fame was a studio in the 1950s: the cape, the board, the argument with communism. That register does not travel into a Norwegian Sunday. This country is secular and social-democratic. A priest who wants to be understood will talk about faith in a Lutheran landscape, about people who cannot find a church, about the sacraments. He will not build the sermon on another country’s culture war.
That does not make Sheen useless here. It makes the useful Sheen smaller.
What still speaks is not the Emmy. It is the Holy Hour. It is a priest who answers the comment. It is speech clear enough for someone who did not grow up Catholic. It is the refusal to treat media as a toy. Sheen put the Gospel where people already were. In this country that place is not a stadium in Missouri. It is a phone on a bus between Stavanger and Oslo.
If Sheen is to be heard in a Norwegian church, the way is not to scold the silence. The way is the one Brazil already used. Translate the part that fits this latitude. Leave the rest in Peoria.
His English books are easy to find. Treasure in Clay is a clean place to start.

Blessed Fulton Sheen can serve this mission. He does not have to become its mascot.
